Description:
Shamanistic chant meets modern electronics: "Gierran" (Enchantment) is the second CD from the Finnish Sami yoik master, Wimme.
Gierran takes off where Wimme left; a logical development from the debut. Using the same producer and musicians as before, Gierran goes further in combining the unaccompanied yoik vocals of Wimme Saari and the modern ambient sounds of the backing band RinneRadio.
Yoik is a traditional chant style that has many elements in common with Native American music.
"Arvedávgi" tells the story of a reindeer’s life from May to July, from birth to the earmarking. Traditional solo yoik "Rievssat" is about the enemies of the snow grouse. "Oainnáhus" is a trip in the landscape that starts from the home mountain and continues through the frosty sky painted by Northern Lights to the real world opening behind the stars.
Throughout, Wimme takes yoik to a new level: Gierran has more rhythm elements than before, and offers an exciting aural trip which explores new musical landscapes. As the name of the CD implies, the trip is an enchanting one.
