Description:
Wimme Saari has established himself as an international star by blending the traditional chant music of his native Sámis with modern, electronic composition through the Wimme band. Since 1995 the band has enchanted audiences around the world, and released four CDs with a unique blend of joik (Sámi chant), synthesizers and samplers, stringed instruments and winds.
Instinct provides a showcase for solo voice, a personal statement from Wimme Saari which demonstrates how joik touches all aspects of life. Listening to Wimme's voice conjures generations of his ancestors, an ancient sound channeling through a young body. Yet even when he's singing solo you feel a sense of perspective, wisdom and humor that comes from a man who is clearly living in the modern world.
Enhanced CD features three Quicktime videos of Wimme Saari's solo joik on location outdoors.

Reviews
- "Wimme Saari is best known as an innovator, taking the ancient joik of the Samis of northernmost Europe and mixing it with contemporary ideas, modern electronics, stringed instruments and winds. Theis recording is the proverbial 'return to the roots' in a set of traditional, unadorned joiks; visceral, pure and unadulterated." -- cdroots.com
- "...anyone who prefers cultivated gardens over wildflowers or would rather vacation at a resort than sleep rough in the wilderness will probably flinch at the raw, pungent power of these 34 unadulterated solo Sami (indigenous tribes of Scandinavia who were formerly known as Lapps; they call themselves Sapmelas) joiks (chants). Wimme Saari has done other, more commercial albums but for this outing, he has chosen to hark back to the traditions of his ancestors, hardy people who worked as reindeer herders, artisans, fishermen and hunters amid a punishing Northern climate. His rough-edged incantations often veer off into overtones as he describes making coffee over an open fire, cutting a hole with a chainsaw for ice-fishing, or laments how inadequate words can be when describing deep emotions. The enhanced CD includes three videos of the artist outdoors, singing his heart out." -- Christina Roden, amazon.com
- "Instinct (gapmu) feels rather intimate since we (the listeners), are alone in the great outdoors with Wimme. The joiks resemble personal meditations as well as, a homage to daily life of a modern Sami man... Instinct provides Wimme with space to explore his vocal and throat techniques further than on previous recordings with his band. Occasionally subtle sound effects, such as water from an outdoor stream (The Dream Stream) or the whirring motor of a boat, (Father) accompany Wimme's joiks, but for the most part what you hear is ambient air and Wimme's lone vocals... Wimme lives on the edge of a fading tradition that stretches back to ancient times. He honors that tradition to the best of his ability while also adding colors from his contemporary palette." -- World Music Central dot org
